Fathers Day: A Tribute to Three Dads I Love

Warner, My Hubby, Best Dad On Earth

Around here Father's day used to mean eggs and bacon, a walk to Starbucks, BBQ ribs, perhaps a trip to Bull Soot Jeep for Korean food. Those were the days, cough cough, choke.. not any more my friends. Today Warner, my hubby and resident father to the kids got a yummy green smoothie for breakfast. He had Thai Food for lunch with his brother, then I made

corn in the dehydrator,

a rocking salad full of green love, a ginger miso dressing I blended and the topper,
fresh juiced watermelon with a sprig of mint.
Then he took the kids and boy wonder Malcolm to the school to play catch and run around. Warner is the most patient man on earth, we are like yin and yang, that's why it works. He also has a great sense of humor and a love of music like me. Pretty good, pretty darn good...
Now THAT is a good sport! For a finale, we plan to watch vintage 70's kung fu movies with titles like "The Man With the Secret of Kung Fu!" Perhaps we will snack on some fresh fruit while we watch...my family is not all raw but I am working on them. Warner is getting more and more into raw eating.....I plan to cure his life long asthma.. shhhh , don't tell him..yet! 14 years of love and still going strong, thanks babe for putting up will all my craziness and my moods and all the stuff I have around and all the raw food wackiness...love you.

Manley: Best Grandpa and Dad Ever!
Warner's Dad Manley is 73 but acts like a teenager, in a good way. He is an avid yoga practioner, doing Astanga Yoga at least twice a week and hitting the YMCA a few times too. He and my Mom in law live in Hawaii so we always are greeted with "howzit?" by Dad. Thanks for all you do for us and thanks for being a true inspiration in the way you live your life. Maholo to you!

My Dad David Lawrence Milford
My dad, Dave, passed away from Leukemia complications over 18 years ago. He was an environmentalist, Sierra Club member, hiker, backpacker, an avid bike rider (he once flew to San Francisco and rode back to Simi Valley and he was in his forties at the time), a smart guy, a great writer and all around jokester. He had a bit of a dark side to him and I was never sure what would make him angry. He also suffered with type one diabetes and needed daily insulin shots since he was a teen. A life long smoking habit gave him emphysema and he passed away shortly after turning 58. I learned so much from him, both good and bad. I still think of him every time I am out in nature and now I understand how he felt, what he was trying so hard to pass on to us kids. Dad, thank you for all the lessons you taught me, all the times you made me work on the car or help out in the yard, cross a stream or pitch a tent. I am a better person for all of it. I miss you and love you very much.

Now Go Jump In a Lake..

or better yet, go fly a kite with the ones you love.

I love you my Three Dads,
love deb

What a wonderful post! You have and have had great men in your life! Lucky lady ;)

My parents are in town and I made my father try a green smoothie that also had strawberries, a banana, and blackberries in it. It's so good. Usually I do all green, but since it's summer -- I'm goin' a little bit fruity.
Well, my father said it was good but later he felt like he had cucumber stuck in his throat. He's full of it!

Pure Food & Wine on Tuesday! I'm making the whole family eat raw food!

beautifully written with great pics! I am having fun learning about raw food through your site:) I haven't tried any recipes yet, but plan to soon. Some of the items you mention I'll have to do a little searching for here in South Africa (the health food stores here are few and far between). What are your top 3 favorite, must try recipes? Maybe I can start with those:)

Melissa:
So good to hear from you! I bet you have wonderful fruits and veggies in s africa...my mainstay is juice made of cucumbers, ginger, lemon, apple and whatever leafy greens I can find and sprouts. My next most important daily thing is a green salad with nuts or seeds and avocado. Green smoothies are great for the kids simple too: 2 cups water or coconut water or almond milk, 2 cups fruit, frozen makes it more slushy and 1 cup mild greens like romaine, collards, spinach or kale. Blend and drink!
thanks for coming here!
Michelle: thanks sweet lady thinking of you this week!
